STORYLINE
Police in France and Germany were preparing on Friday to protect NATO's (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) 60th anniversary summit after quelling violent protests on the eve of the gathering with tear gas, rubber bullets and the detention of hundreds of protesters.
The scene on the German side of the Rhine River was calm compared to Strasbourg, where French police detained at least 300 people on Thursday night and forced demonstrators back into a tent camp on the edge of the city.
In the German city of Kehl, traffic continued to move across the Europe Bridge that links France to Germany ahead of its closing and scores of police patrolled the area.
France has temporarily reinstated border controls with its immediate neighbours for the meeting.
A small group of people came to the bridge and unfurled a banner calling for "Peace" as police looked on.
Police in patrol boats zipped up and down the Rhine while helicopters hovered overhead.
Many police vans and units from all over Germany were also on the scene.
While across the bridge, Strasbourg's streets were virtually deserted as unauthorised traffic was forbidden in many parts of the city.
Schools and the university were closed.
Most businesses and restaurants have shut down for the duration of the summit, which will take place in Kehl, Strasbourg and the German spa town of Baden Baden, situated about 40 miles (65 kilometres) northeast.
German authorities estimate that up to 25-thousand protesters will take part in several demonstrations in Baden-Baden and Kehl, while France's interior minister has suggested 30-thousand to 40-thousand ultimately could show up in Strasbourg, where a camp has been set up to house demonstrators.
"We want to shut down NATO," protest organiser Jung Meller said.
