Episode 90: Why Baja California Is a Vanlifer's Dream

Описание: They say that "difficult roads always lead to beautiful destinations." This pretty much summarizes my experience this past February on the Baja California peninsula traveling in my 2018 Dodge Promaster conversion van. While the "highways" throughout the Baja are narrow, often lacking a shoulder, steep and windy, and riddled with potholes (and this is when they are paved!), the scenery is something out of a fairytale. In our five weeks on the Baja peninsula, we camped on unbelievable beaches with clear blue and turquoise waters, we snorkeled with sea lions, we had gray whales come right up to our boat close enough that you could (and we did!) touch them, we explored centuries old Spanish missions and thousand year old old cave paintings, and we even watched our own Philadelphia Eagles win the SuperBowl. It truly was a vanlifer's dream to finally be able to take vanlife at our own leisurely pace, open our doors up to incredible views of the Sea of Cortez, watch the sunrise over the calm waters of the Bahia Concepcion, participate as day-old sea turtles were released from the hatchery into the Pacific Ocean and still enjoy the usual touristy things to do in San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Todos Santos. The desert landscape is literally out of a dream world, with the enormous branched cardon cacti everywhere, Dr Seuss trees, trees with silver bark, and spectacular chocolate-covered mountain ranges. And then there are the beaches, the crystal clear water, and the amazing star-filled skies so dark that you could see the Milky Way. All that and the people were so welcoming, the cuisine was both exquisite and inexpensive, and the whole vibe of the vanlife community camping, paddling, kayaking, and playing music around the campfire completely overwhelmed my wildest expectations and left me relaxed, reconsidering what is truly important in life, and as free as a bird. Along the journey, we visited the towns of San Felipe, Gurrero Negro, San Ignacio, Santa Rosalia, Mulege, Loreto, La Paz, La Ventana, el Sargento, Los Barilles, San Javier, San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos and the Sea of Cortez, Bahia de los Angeles, Bahai Concepcion, Oje de Liebre lagoon, Pacific Ocean, and Gulf of California.
