With growing evidence linking sleep-related conditions to poor health outcomes, International Longevity Centre UK and our partner, the University of Surrey Centre of Excellence on Ageing, hosted a webinar exploring the vital role of sleep in healthy ageing.
Many people in the UK are chronically sleep-deprived – on average missing the equivalent of a full night’s sleep each week. Around 16% of adults get fewer than six hours’ sleep a night. For older people, this matters even more: sleep duration tends to decline by around 10 minutes per decade, increasing the risk of comorbidities associated with poor sleep. In an ageing society, tackling inequalities in sleep is essential if longer lives are also to be healthier ones.
In this webinar, our speakers draw on research and lived experience to unpack common myths about sleep, explore how sleep changes across the life course and discuss what can be done – individually and collectively – to support better sleep as we age.
