John Goss was likewise a member of the Chapel Royal, though some 100 years after Gibbons. He was organist of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and taught at the Royal Academy. O Saviour of the World is a simple yet compelling setting that would have allowed Goss to draw maximum effect from his limited choir–the era between Henry Purcell (d. 1695) and the advent of Charles Villiers Stanford (b. 1852) was not exactly the golden age of English church music!
