This lens test features the Ancient Optics/GL Optics-Rehoused Voigtlander 36-82mm T/3.1 Zoom. The video serves as the first in a series of lens tests in order to help provide knowledge, and more importantly a point of reference for filmmakers as they consider what optics tell their story most effectively. This Voigtlander zoom was an important one, it started a revolution of extremely usable, versatile, and portable zoom optics in photo-world, and when properly rehoused, lends a wealth of texture and feeling to the images it creates. It covers LF/VV easily, is parfocal, focuses internally, has a long focus throw with proper gearings on all three rings, and has a rock solid PL mount.
This lens has a soft focus rolloff with noticeable spherical aberration and astigmatism near the edge of LF frame. The lens features bokeh that remains noticeably overcorrected, leaving sharp, definable bokeh orbs with a very dimensional, textural rendering to out-of-focus areas. The lens moves from slight barrel to medium pin distortion through the zoom range, with noticeable breathing and a middling contrast. When flared, the lens readily loses most of that contrast and is filled with a warm/rosy wash of color and fairly complex artifacts as the light moves through frame.
All footage captured on Alexa Mini LF, 4.6K OG.
