Rukanga's Chain-links fencing solution for new farms
In a few years, Edwin Rukanga will qualify to be a public health officer. This wasn't his first choice of career. He wanted to be an engineer but his cluster points did not allow it.
Even though he will likely work in the health sector, he hasn't let go his love for engineering. He is still in his favourite field, courtesy of the chain links he makes to serve as fences.
Any farm needs to be secured by a strong fence. Today, Rukanga, 21, is making money through sale of the chain-link.
A child brought up by a widowed mother, Rukanga's new venture helps him cater for most of his college needs.
He uses the backyard of his mother's farm in Karatina , Nyeri County, even as he continue with his studies at Maseno University. "Farms, plots and homesteads require strong fences. My product guarantees this," says Rukanga.
For the last 6 months, Rukanga's chain-links have become a hit among new farmers. He has sold them in several counties, mostly in Nairobi, Kajiado and Narok. Most orders ask for seven rolls of the chain link with each measuring 18 metres by 5 feet wide which he sells at Sh 2,200.
On top of the financial independence he is nurturing through sale of the chain-links, he has already created jobs for three youths.
Rukanga, an active member of Mkulima Young, has been utilizing Mkulima Young Soko to market his chain-links. "Mkulima Young Soko has really promoted my work", says Rukanga and adds, "I have been able to double my sales."

Rukanga is now able to support himself through college and also provide some support to his mum.
His parting shot, "Youths need only to get good entrepreneurial ideas and support to implement them."
