Barbarika, eager to participate in the war, offered his assistance. Krishna, knowing that Barbarika's single arrow had the potential to end the war in a single shot, posed a test to him.
Krishna asked Barbarika how he would support one side while having familial ties to both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. In response, Barbarika revealed his divine ability: his arrows could identify the side with the most merit and automatically move towards it.
To avoid a swift and one-sided conclusion to the war, Krishna made a request of Barbarika. He asked for his head in charity, as this would bind Barbarika to his promise to not support either side. Barbarika agreed and offered his head to Krishna.
