This video shows a rocket engine nozzle exploding just seconds after the test began at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.
The nozzle of a rocket engine is a critical component that directs the flow of hot gases produced during combustion to generate thrust. Its main purpose is to convert the high-pressure, high-temperature gases from the combustion chamber into a high-speed exhaust jet, propelling the rocket forward. Typically shaped in a bell or conical form, the nozzle includes a narrow "throat" where the gas reaches sonic speed, followed by a widening section that accelerates the gas to supersonic speeds. Because of the extreme conditions—high temperatures, pressures, and mechanical stress—the nozzle must be made from materials that can withstand intense heat and vibrations. A failure in the nozzle, such as cracking or material fatigue, can lead to catastrophic events like explosions during engine tests or launches.
