1. The U.S. on Saturday sent troops to forcibly seize Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife and transfer them out of the country. Governments of many countries have voiced opposition to this. What is China’s comment?
China expresses grave concern over the U.S. forcibly seizing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and taking them out of the country. The U.S.’s move is in clear violation of international law, basic norms in international relations, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China calls on the U.S. to ensure the personal safety of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, release them at once, stop toppling the government of Venezuela, and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation.
2. Shortly before Maduro was forcibly seized by the U.S., Chinese diplomats met with him. Can the spokesperson confirm whether these Chinese diplomats are still in Caracas?
China is closely monitoring the security situation in Venezuela. At present, there have been no reports of Chinese personnel in Venezuela being affected by U.S. airstrikes.
3. What were the exchanges during the meeting between the Chinese diplomats and Maduro about? Did recent tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela come up during the meeting? Was the Chinese side aware of or did they have any Information before about the U.S. military action?
Mr. Qiu Xiaoqi is the Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Latin American Affairs, and visiting Latin American countries is part of his work. China has always maintained good communication and cooperation with the Venezuelan government.
4. Has China had any contact with Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodriguez? In addition, U.S. President Trump has stated that the United States will increase investment in Venezuela’s oil sector. Will China continue to import Venezuelan oil?
Regarding your first question, China respects Venezuela’s sovereignty and independence and believes that the Venezuelan government will properly handle its internal affairs in accordance with its constitution and laws. Regarding your second question, cooperation between China and Venezuela is cooperation between sovereign states, protected by international law and the laws of both countries. Regardless of changes in Venezuela’s political situation, China’s willingness to deepen practical cooperation in various fields will not change, and China’s legitimate interests in Venezuela will be protected in accordance with the law.
5. What is China’s comment on U.S. President Trump’s remarks about regime change in Venezuela and plans to allow major U.S. oil companies to get involved?
The U.S. has wantonly used force against Venezuela. This act seriously violates international law and the basic norms governing international relations, infringes upon Venezuela’s sovereignty and threatens peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean. China has already expressed its condemnation. All parties should respect Venezuela’s right to independently choose its development path and promote stability and the restoration of local order in the country.
6. In an interview on Sunday, U.S. President Trump said that Venezuela might not be the last country the United States intervenes in and claimed that they absolutely need Greenland. What is China’s comment?
China has consistently advocated handling relations between countries in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
