Let’s talk a little bit about the word Hû today. You can find this word very often in the poetry, for example also in this third selam.
A lifetime would not be enough to fully explore this concept, but I can at least try to express it in a few words for those who are not deeply familiar with Sufism. Myself, I´m still learning about this topic and I only know once: I know nothing!
Hû, هو, He, is one of the most essential names of the Divine in Sufi tradition.
It is both spoken and breathed. It is the divine breath who gives life, the invocation of the human soul towards the Divine. In several Sufi traditions, especially within practices of dhikr, the invocation of Hû is closely connected to the breath and to the remembrance of the Divine. It is the sound that we all carry whithin us. It is the pronoun of the Absolute, the most pure way to referr to the Divine. Because God is beyond every name and description, he is in everywhere and everywhere is his breath.
In this sense, playing the ney can be understood as carrying a continuous, unspoken Hû. Why? The breath flows directly into the reed, without any intermediary and the sound is shaped entirely by the breath. A beautiful feeling and a huge privilege having this instrument in my life.
Hû zenem ber kudsiyân her şeb zi dil hû hû zenem
Ber cemâl-i Hak heme yâhû vu yâmen hû hû zenem
Dil çu cây-i Hak buved, Hak bâ menest u men be Hak
Hak be Hak vâsıl şode ber hîşten hû hû zenem
Each night I call out Hû to the holy beings; from the depths of my heart I cry Hû, Hû.
Before the beauty of the Truth, I call Yâ Hû, and again I cry Hû, Hû.
When the heart becomes the dwelling place of God, God is with me and I am with God.
Having united with the Truth in the Truth, I cry Hû, Hû within myself.
