Hey guys, THG here. Today I'm excited to talk to you about my largest Pogonomyrmex occidentalis colony. We'll talk about their journey from a young queen with just 20 workers, to being well on track to outgrowing their Tarheel ants XL Labyrinth.
I first got this colony in May of 2021. I originally had them in a cheap Chinese nest, and I quickly learned that they were able to chew through the material. I ordered a Tarheel ants fallen fortress and got them moved over quickly. I started off feeding them a strict diet of mostly dandelion seeds and fish food flakes. Occasionally giving them some fruit flies and crickets. I sometimes offered them ByFormica Sunburst, and termite alates.
By September of 2021 I had to move them to a Tarheel ants Labyrinth as they had outgrown their fallen fortress. They continued to grow, and with the queen taking a break now and again on laying eggs, they quickly surprised me with their aggressiveness towards food when the colony reached larger numbers.
As they kept growing, I had to upgrade their home again by June of 2022. This time to a Tarheel ants XL Labyrinth with two out worlds. They quickly surprised me again on July 18th of 2022 with our first queen alate! A very healthy sign that a colony has met mature levels.
To this day they keep growing, and will likely require me to upgrade their home yet again. I'll leave you now to observe them for yourselves. This is THG, signing off.
