Janusz Wawrowski, playing the Polish Stradivarius violin (1685), with the Elbląg Chamber Orchestra conducted by Paweł Kotla.
Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996), born to a Jewish family in Warsaw, managed at the start of World War II to escape to Russia, although his family were all murdered in Nazi concentration camps. He became a friend of Dmitri Shostakovich and wrote symphonies, chamber works and operas as well as a number of concertos. The Concertino for violin and string orchestra, op. 42 was written in 1948 and has three movements: the first movement (allegretto cantabile) is followed by a cadenza leading to an andante slow movement. The finale is a wistful waltz -rondo.
