As we start off the new year, we often make plans to have a better year than last year. And while we don’t know what the future holds, we do know that we are going to encounter difficulties. We’re going to face some troubles. Some of it will be of our own making, and sometimes it will just crash over us like a tidal wave. The question we have to ask ourselves is “how are we going to respond when that happens?”
James is one of the earliest letters of the New Testament, written to mainly Jewish background Christians. It is a letter of wisdom and advice on how to live when facing difficult times. He starts off the letter by talking about how we should think about and react to those hard times. He moves to discussing some problem areas that his readers face; areas that we too struggle with. Toward the end of his letter, James turns to exhorting his readers to wise living. In our passage this morning, we’re going to see that wise living means that we need to be patient.
