During the 12th and 13th centuries, the city experienced remarkable economic and political growth, driven by its powerful textile industry, especially wool, and the influence of its banking families. This newfound wealth laid the groundwork for the extraordinary cultural boom that would transform it into the epicenter of an unprecedented movement in art history.

It was in the second half of the 14th century, and particularly in the 15th century, that Florence truly emerged as the birthplace of the Renaissance.
