As of January 2026, India and the European Union (EU) are in the final stages of concluding a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), also referred to as the Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA). Described by Indian officials as the "mother of all deals," the pact is expected to be formally announced during the 16th India–EU Summit on January 27, 2026, in New Delhi.
Current Status of the Deal
Negotiation Progress: As of mid-January 2026, 20 out of 24 chapters of the agreement have been finalized.
Announcement Timeline: The visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa (from January 25–27) is expected to serve as the platform for the deal's conclusion.
Tariff Phase-out: The agreement aims to eliminate or significantly reduce tariffs, which currently range from 8–12% for many goods, with a target for zero duties on most items by 2027–2030.

Data Governance: Discrepancies between the EU's GDPR and India’s Data Protection Act (DPDP) 2023 regarding data localization still create friction.
Investment Protection: Separate negotiations for an Investment Protection Agreement and a pact on Geographical Indications (GIs) are proceeding alongside the main FTA.
