Parambikulam Tiger reserve is a gorgeous jungle that is surrounded by the mighty mountains of the Western Ghats and is made up of many natural water reservoirs. It's diverse habitat ranging from hilly terrain, wooded forests, bamboo thickets to reservoirs is home to a wide range of flora and fauna.
Even though the tiger reserve is in Kerala, its access is via Tamil nadu and that is what makes it even more special. It is connected with the Anaimalai tiger reserve of Tamil Nadu and is extremely popular for its elephants, Indian Gaurs, tigers, leopards, hornbills and many other species.
In this video, you can see us climbing to the Veetikunnu Island nest property from the place where the boat dropped us. From there, it is a 10 minute steep climb to the accommodation. Veetikunnu Island nest is surrounded by rosewood, sandalwood, arjuna and other exotic varities of flora that attract many species of birds and animals. Many animals swim across the reservoir from the forest to come and graze here. This includes elephants too and that is why the forest department have dug a deep trench around the property. One can see beautiful views of the Parambikulam dam and the surrounding jungle from Veetikunnu Island nest. The only way to explore the island is on foot and care should be taken of being visited by wild animals and reptiles. The only way to get in or out of the island is by boat. There is absolutely no connectivity here. There is electricity, but that too can stop working from time to time. If you carry your food supply, the forest department folks will cook basic South Indian meals for you. As you can see, the place is basic, but therein lies its true charm.
