Описание: Sufism can be portrayed as inner mystical aspect of Islam that accommodates ancient philosophies. As a mystic tradition, the unity in existence is the fundamental concept of life in Sufism's philosophy. Sufism is a path in which each follower experience god directly through. No words can describe the experience, yet the closest form is poetry which is words combined with Art (mainly music). Architecture as a complete form of Art has been a medium Creating Spaces to help the love and experience revealed.
As I have concluded in my research last semester, Architecture of Sufism needs to be experiential. It needs to take everyone to a journey to their essence. In physicality as Sufis it needs to be essential and minimal.
The project is the Sufi campus which is situated in Konya, Turkey. Across the Rumi (Famous Sufi poet) The Sufi campus is making a contrast with dense city context surrounding it.
Sufi campus is designed based on experience of the meditation in Sufism. Therefore the process of design has been started experientially. The design started with Simple experiential charcoal sketches that each one simply reveals the experience of a space, and all together they create different narratives of a journey; Journey through the Sufi campus. These narratives are dedicated to three different stages of human being; Spirit, Mind and Body.
The Sufi campus is a forest of wonder and Discovery. The dense, ordered forest of Cypress (the eternal tree of knowledge, Symbol of divine tree) makes one lost. One needs to wonder in this forest to find the destination (As the meditation). There are three main components in this retreat campus, and each one is dedicated to a stage of human beings; Body, Mind and Spirit.
Body Contains Dormitory and refractory which responds to basic needs of human beings. As the body consists of four elements (Fire, Water, Air and Earth) Body space is submerged to remind going back to earth and it becomes holder of four elements. Sleeping are is submerged too and it demonstrates the famous quote: Sleep and death are brothers. All the buildings are square exhibiting limited Physical world. Sleeping are is submerged too and it demonstrates the famous quote: Sleep and death are brothers .In Sleeping Space one can see the light (Light of truth).
Mind Building is a place for knowledge. It contains library and study rooms. The building is elevated Looking and open to nature. It is pierced be light from above. Light and shadow creates many forms as mind does; it refers to the Plato's cave example. Infinite light breaks limited rectangular mind and the largest pierce of Light Creates a space holding nature inside (A cypress tree; Tree of knowledge). If one wants to reach the mind he needs to circle around this space.
Spirit is a submerged circular worship space within the Square of the body (infinite within limits like human beings). Descending to a dark, circling around the temple make one forget him/herself. Ablution space is cleansed with the light from above and the water coming from light. The circular temple is the destination; A space made by light, unlimited, infinite, a transcending Space in which you will be one with the light.
Meditation spaces are transitional spaces connecting experience of the spaces; Water, fire , earth, Air, Direction and Space are six incomplete meditation spaces that with the temple they become Seven and Complete.
