I met a girl named Kathleen on a Search Weekend, a Catholic retreat for high school students.
We were on team for one of the weekends. It was customary to write the retreat attendees (candidates) and fellow team members a palanca, a letter encouraging them and telling them a way that you were sacrificing for their good and the success of the weekend.
When the time during the weekend came for us to read our palancas, I got a beautiful one from Kathleen. I, however, didn't get to write hers as I was a pretty bad procrastinator and left things to the last minute.
When I found Kathleen and thanked her, she said "oh no problem, I haven't gotten to yours yet...."
That's when I had to confess that I hadn't gotten around to writing it.
She took it graciously.
When the weekend was over and I was back home, before I even took off my jacket, I picked up my guitar and wrote this song....a palanca...sung.
