Not many people know that the F-35 has a cannon and yet they are almost correct. In fact, it is only the F-35A that has an internal General Dynamics GAU-22/A 25mm cannon. This is located on the portside (left) on to of the fuselage close to the wing which can be no identified by the raised, low RCS designed indent on the F-35A. The F-35B and F-35C do not have one and this raised section is missing on these two variants. There is however, an option for a specially mounted external GAU-22A for the F-35 B & C that can be fitted underneath the belly of both variants.
Comparison with the A-10’s cannon.
The GAU-8 is a much larger cannon (at 6.06m total system length and 2.30m barrel length) firing various 30mm rounds with 7 barrels firing at a rate of 4,200 rounds per minute with an accuracy rate of 80% of rounds hitting within a 40-foot diameter circle at a range of 4,000 feet. Muzzle velocity at 3,400 feet (1,036m) per second
The GAU-22/A has been specially designed for the F-35A. There is an external mountable option for the B and C variants. Firing 25mm of armour piercing bullets with its 4 barrels compact in a total length of just 2.11m! Rate of fire is 3,300 per minute with a muzzle velocity at 3,560 feet (1,085m) per second.
We have four Lockheed Martin F-35A Lighting II of the 493d Fighter Squadron of the 48th Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath, which is a USAFE base in Suffolk, UK. Callsign was RUSTLE and I am guessing that this is a 493d Fighter Squadron callsign of "the Grim Reapers".
GAU-22/A
The awesome GAU-22/A has four barrels and is exclusively designed for the F-35 Lightning. The GAU-22/A is lighter than the 5 barrel version, the GAU-12/U, and has a reduced rate of fire of 3,300 rounds per minute, but maintains the same, high accuracy of 5 milliradians, 80% circle of the GAU-12 and A-10's GAU-8.The GAU-22/A cannon is produced by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems.
The target most likely to have been used at Holbeach was Target 5, which are stilts at 30ft with armoured plating. They have armoured plates for good reason because the GAU-22/A uses Nammo 25 mm PGU-47/U APEX (Armor Piercing with Explosive) projectile, which has been developed for the GAU-22/A. It features a tungsten carbide penetrator in the tip and an explosive fragmentation body, to be multi-purpose against both hardened and soft targets. Also, the presence of a clockworking inertia-driven mechanical fuze in the mid-body, protects the round from shocks, misfires and cookoffs, making it safer to handle and fire. This gives the F-35A another trick up its sleeve to coordinate in Close Air Support, Air to ground attack on armoured vehicles etc.
