This exercise may be useful if you have one-sided back pain (right over the sacroiliac joint) with or without referral to the buttock or leg. Many such patients will actually have SIJ pain secondary to an underlying back problem, and resolving this with repeated back exercises freqeuntly resolves the apparent SIJ problem.
Typically the exercises are done 10-12 repetitions every few hours.
