Описание: Housing more than 150,000 samples of cultivated plants, from cereals and legumes to oil and fodder crops and potatoes, the Genebank is at the heart of the IPK Leibniz Institute. This collection is becoming increasingly valuable in an era of climate change and a growing global population. This is because some old crop varieties and their wild relatives have characteristics that will become increasingly important in the future. This is reason enough to present the Genebank, and the great opportunities it offers for modern, sustainable agriculture, in a new film.
Modern agriculture is not the only thing that has changed in recent decades. The focus on a few high-yielding varieties has resulted in a significant loss of biodiversity. However, the gene bank, which preserves many of these old species, is also evolving. Thanks to technological advances, the collection is increasingly becoming a Biodigital Resource Centre. This is a facility in which stored plant material is systematically linked with detailed data, including molecular information. This allows these resources to be accessed and utilised more precisely, comprehensively, effectively and efficiently. Comprehensive digital information is a vital resource for plant breeders, helping them to develop new varieties adapted to specific local conditions and ensuring that our crops are fit for tomorrow's world. The film showcases the work of both researchers and plant breeders, demonstrating how this is already being achieved today. They all aim to conserve genetic diversity and put it to active use, building a bridge from the past to the future through the genebank.
