Bleeding in stools can be of different kinds in which the main types are:

Fresh blood and clot - This type of bleeding occurs in the lower part of the large intestine.
Large intestinal - If the bleeding occurs in the upper part of the large intestine the stools will be of dark red or of brown color.
Small intestinal - If the bleeding occurs in the small intestine or even in the stomach, the stools will be of black color and are often called tarry stools.

The major causes of fresh bleeding in stools can be piles, fissures, or fistula. It can also be due to an anal polyp or an ulcer in the lower large intestine. Colitis which is swelling in the large intestine can cause bleeding. Colon cancer is also a reason for bleeding in stools.
