In this cinematic architecture film, we take you inside Frame House, a striking example of contemporary modernism designed by Mork-Ulnes Architects in Sonoma County, California. Inspired by the legacy of West Coast modernists such as Pierre Koenig, Richard Neutra and Gregory Ain, the house reinterprets California Modernism through a refined, contemporary lens, balancing openness, light, and indoor-outdoor living with environmental resilience.
Rooted in a rigorous rectangular grid, the residence is organized around a deep loggia and a rhythmic column structure that defines both public and private zones. The architectural framework allows spaces to alternate between solid walls and expansive glass voids, creating a dynamic dialogue between introversion and extroversion. A fully glazed northern façade frames panoramic views toward Manzanita Canyon, while deep concrete overhangs and timber decks extend the living areas outward, blurring the boundary between the interior and the landscape.
The ground floor unfolds as an open social plan, seamlessly connecting kitchen, dining, and living areas through operable glass walls to east and west terraces. Upstairs, four private bedrooms are arranged around a dramatic double-height void and catwalk, preserving the sense of lightness and spatial continuity.
Materiality plays a crucial role in the home’s identity. A concrete shell is wrapped in western red cedar siding, referencing Sonoma’s agrarian vernacular while softening the visual presence of the structure. Interiors combine bleached Douglas fir and polished concrete floors, achieving a tactile balance between warmth and precision.
Beyond aesthetics, Frame House integrates advanced wildfire-resilient strategies and sustainable design solutions. Non-combustible roofing, a sprinkler system, passive shading, cross-ventilation, radiant heating, and an onsite photovoltaic system ensure environmental performance and energy independence. A solar field and battery backup system provide operational continuity, even in emergency conditions.
This film is not simply a documentation of a house, it is a poetic and cinematic journey through space, light, and atmosphere. Through carefully composed frames and immersive pacing, we explore how architecture shapes emotion, perception, and daily life.
If you are passionate about modern architecture, California modernism, sustainable residential design, or contemporary homes that merge design and landscape, this film offers an intimate and visually powerful experience.
