A man whose life is a celebration of both service and art, Dr S Sunder stands at a rare intersection of music, medicine, scholarship, and social impact. A truly multifaceted personality, he has earned recognition in every field he has touched.

In the world of Carnatic music, Dr Sunder is one of the foremost musicians and musicologists today. A senior disciple of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri D K Jayaraman and Sri T K Govinda Rao, he is widely respected for carrying forward the classic DKJ bani with fidelity, depth, and clarity.

He has performed over 500 concerts across the globe, captivating audiences in Singapore, Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Malaysia, Europe, and India. Trained in musicology by Sri P K Rajagopala Iyer, he combines artistry with scholarship in a rare and compelling way.

As Convenor of The Music Forum, Chennai, he has curated landmark lec-dem series and educational initiatives for students and rasikas. His media productions include Maithreem Bhajatha, Pannisai Viththagargal, Kaana Vendamo, Pathigamum Pasuramum, and the celebrated HMV educational series Learning to Appreciate Carnatic Music.

Honoured with titles such as Isai Kalai Chelvar, Gana Kala Vipanchee, Ganamurthy, and the prestigious Kalaimamani, he also serves as the Asthana Vidwan of the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt. A dedicated guru, he continues to mentor and inspire the next generation of musicians.

Beyond music, Dr Sunder is a distinguished Physiatrist, specialising in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He is the author of India’s first textbook on Rehabilitation Medicine, which is prescribed across universities and regarded as a foundational reference in the field.

Through his organisation, Freedom Trust, he has transformed the lives of thousands of physically challenged individuals, providing mobility aids, rehabilitation support, vocational training, and career pathways. His work has earned him the National Award for Best Individual in Social Service and the State Government’s Best Doctor Award.
