OVER THE WATERS – Story & Meaning
Artist: CarfanaOne
Biblical Passage
This song is inspired by Matthew 14:22–33 in the New Testament.
After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends His disciples ahead by boat across the Sea of Galilee while He goes alone to pray. During the night, a strong storm arises and the disciples struggle against the wind and waves.
In the darkest hours of the night, Jesus comes walking toward them on the water.
At first the disciples are terrified, thinking they are seeing a ghost. But Jesus speaks to them:
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
(Matthew 14:27)
Peter then answers:
“Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
Jesus simply replies:
“Come.”
Peter steps out of the boat and begins walking on the water toward Jesus. But when he notices the strong wind and waves, fear overwhelms him and he begins to sink. Crying out, he says:
“Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reaches out His hand and catches him, saying:
“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
When they climb into the boat, the wind stops, and the disciples worship Him, saying:
“Truly you are the Son of God.”
Meaning of the Song
“Over the Waters” tells this story from the perspective of the disciples experiencing the storm.
The song reflects several powerful themes from the Gospel:
Fear in the storm
Life often feels like the disciples’ boat — surrounded by waves, uncertainty, and darkness.
Faith in Christ
Peter is able to walk on water only while his eyes remain fixed on Jesus.
Human weakness
The moment Peter focuses on the wind and the waves instead of Christ, he begins to sink.
Grace and salvation
Even when Peter doubts, Jesus immediately reaches out His hand and saves him.
The message of the song is simple but profound:
When our eyes are on Christ, even the impossible becomes possible.
When we focus on fear instead of faith, we begin to sink.
But Christ’s hand is always ready to lift us up.
Prayer Inspired by the Song
Lord Jesus,
When the storms of life rise around us and fear fills our hearts, remind us that You are near.
Just as You walked across the waves to Your disciples, walk into the storms of our lives today.
Teach us to keep our eyes fixed on You and not on the wind or the waves around us.
And when our faith fails and we begin to sink, reach out Your hand as You did for Peter.
Lift us up, strengthen our faith, and guide us safely through every storm.
For You are truly the Son of God,
the Lord over the sea, the wind, and every storm.
Amen.
OVER THE WATERS
(Matthew 14:22–33)
CarfanaOne
[INTRO – instrumental]
(Ancient lyre, harp, frame drums, distant shofar — night atmosphere)
[VERSE 1]
The night was deep, the wind was strong
The boat was small, the waves were wrong
We pulled the oars with trembling hands
Far from the shore, no solid land
The sky was closed, no guiding light
Just fear repeating through the night
When suddenly, upon the sea
A figure moved… impossibly
[PRE-CHORUS]
Our hearts cried out in holy dread
Is this the living… or the dead?
[CHORUS]
It is I — do not be afraid
A voice that cuts the storm in place
It is I — do not be afraid
The sea stands still at what He says
[VERSE 2]
I said, “Lord, if this is truly You
Command me what my feet must do”
One single word, no second sound
“Come” — and the water turns to ground
As long as my eyes stayed on His face
The waves became a path of grace
But when I looked at wind and fire
The deep remembered my desire
[PRE-CHORUS 2]
Faith walked with me, then slipped away
When fear was given room to stay
[CHORUS]
It is I — do not be afraid
While eyes are fixed, the waters hold
It is I — do not be afraid
His word is stronger than the cold
[BRIDGE – BREAKDOWN]
The wind grew loud, my courage broke
The sea reclaimed what fear awoke
I sank beneath the weight of doubt
And cried His name… a broken shout
[BRIDGE 2 – CRESCENDO]
A hand reached deeper than the sea
Before the deep could swallow me
“O man of little faith,” He said
“Why did you doubt what I had said?”
[FINAL CHORUS]
It is You — above the waters
Lord of the storm, the deep, the night
It is You — above the waters
Even the sea obeys Your might
[OUTRO]
The wind fell silent, the fear was gone
In that small boat, we bowed as one
“Truly You are the Son of God.”
