Welcome to February and we have switched gears to gardening! This week, we explore the chemistry behind composting and gain an understanding of how microbes break down everyday organic materials and turn them into nutrient‑rich compost that supports healthy soil and reduces waste.
Topics we cover include:
• KEY TAKEAWAY: Residential composting techniques are all microbial driven
• What happens to carbohydrates, proteins, and fats from our food waste during composting
• Why composting reduces landfill waste and methane emissions
• The roles of aerobic and anaerobic microbes in decomposition
• Carbon‑rich vs. nitrogen‑rich materials, and why balance matters
• A brief dive into the different residential composting methods: traditional heaps, vermiculture (worms), and Bokashi (fermentation).
And if you want to see this presentation and the Science of Composting Techniques (next presentation) as it was put together as a 1-hr presentation for the Crow Wing County Master Gardeners, go check out: • Composting: Scraps to Soil and the / @cwcmastergardeners channel!
