How Does Graphite Work As A Lubricant? -- Graphite's effectiveness as a lubricant stems from its unique, layered crystal structure. It consists of stacked planes of carbon atoms arranged in a strong hexagonal lattice. While the covalent bonds within each plane are exceptionally strong, the forces holding these separate planes together are very weak van der Waals forces. When a shear force is applied, these weak intermolecular bonds are easily overcome, allowing the layers to slide smoothly and effortlessly over one another with minimal friction. This shearing action is what provides the lubricating property. The process is often enhanced by the presence of adsorbed molecules, such as water vapor from the atmosphere, which get between the layers and further reduce the interlayer attraction. This ability to form a low-friction, solid film makes graphite an excellent dry lubricant, particularly for high-temperature or high-pressure applications where liquid lubricants would decompose.
