The Taiwanese White Dolphin is on the Brink of Extinction
Discovered by scientists only in 2002, the Taiwanese white dolphin lives in shallow nearshore waters along the west coast of Taiwan. However, just about everything in the habitat spells trouble. Gills nets and other fishing lines injure and kill dolphins. The major rivers that create rich estuaries full of dolphin food are running dry. Pollution spews forth from large factories, ending up in adjacent coastal food webs.
The dolphins' habitat is disappearing as factories are built on ‘reclaimed land’ in nearshore coastal waters. But now, an new, and surprising threat, may push these beautiful dolphins over the edge: wind turbines built for green energy. Installed in coastal waters in and around dolphin habitat, the resulting noise may damage hearing, mask the ability of dolphins to find food, or disrupt communications with each other. Join us as an expert panel speaks on extinction risks in this Critically Endangered population of fewer than 75 individuals, and on their plans for a practical recovery plan.
