This book is a memoir and biography that traces the life of Deland McCullough, from his childhood and adoption in Youngstown, Ohio, through his rise as a standout football player, his time in the NFL, and his long coaching career. Football is central to this story, not only as a sport, but as a source of discipline, opportunity, self-discovery, and growth.

Alongside McCullough’s football journey is a deeply personal story about family and identity. As an adult, he searches for his biological parents and ultimately discovers that his father is someone he had already known, worked with, and deeply respected. That revelation reshapes his understanding of family, mentorship, and himself.

I picked up this book after hearing Sarah Spain talk about it on A.J. Jacobs’s podcast, and I found it to be an inspiring and generous story. It shows how perseverance, mentorship, and care can help someone build a meaningful life, even without strong support early on.
