I hate metal distortion pedals. They seem to be universally plagued by fizzy, harsh treble, muddy low frequencies, nonexistent dynamics, excess noise, or in most cases, all of these things. Despite my prejudices, I love the Empress Heavy, and have since the moment of its release. It's a high-gain, metal-oriented distortion, but it actually sounds good. I don't know how they did it (Great job, Canada!). The Heavy has goo-gobs of gain for all your satanic stuff, but it does more moderate, "cranked amp" kind of sounds really well, and its gate is superbly musical. I also love how the Heavy articulates extended chord voicings and super dissonant intervals, letting each note ring clearly even when the gain is set on insane-o. It makes those tremolo-picked black metal riffs sound almost too good, to be honest.
