Streets Of Rage 3 (Bare Knuckle III in Japan) is the third entry in SEGA's highly-regarded beat 'em up series, which came out in 1994. Unlike the previous games, Streets Of Rage 3 was released solely on SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive, rather than receiving 8-bit ports to Master System and Game Gear.

Streets Of Rage 3 was less well received than the second game in the series. SEGA opted to use a darker tone for the third game, with grittier graphics. The music is harder and more experimental, making it an acquired taste.

The difficulty was increased from previous entries in the series. Players are not able to access the later levels of the game when playing in easy mode, so must use normal mode or above to see the true ending. It is also possible to reach a bad endings by failing objectives.

The Western releases of the game were censored, giving female characters more modest outfits than in the Japanese version. The palettes of Axel, Blaze and Skate were also changed. Victy was renamed as Roo, and Skate as Sammy. Most notably, the mini-boss Ash was removed from the game (unless the player uses an external cheat or hack).

Despite these drawbacks, SEGA made various improvements to the gameplay in Streets Of Rage 3. All players have the ability to dash (rather than only Skate having this ability in the second game), and can dodge towards the foreground and background. These new movements increase the pace of the gameplay, adding to the excitement.

The pro wrestler Max Thunder has been replaced by a scientist called Dr. Zan. As a cyborg, Zan has enhanced abilities such as electrocuting the enemies, and turning weapons into "bowling balls" of electric energy. He is the first character in the series to have two back throws from a standing position (Max and Skate each have a rear jumping throw). The moves of the other main characters are largely unchanged from the second game, but they now have unique weapon-specific dash moves, which the player can level up by scoring highly.

Co-op moves and rear grab escapes return from the first game. These techniques were inexplicably missing in Streets Of Rage 2. The player can once again escape rear grapples by kicking up their legs and then throwing the assailant over their head. The partner assists can be performed in three ways- Vaulting over your partner to launch into a flying attack, throwing your partner at the enemy, or being thrown at the enemy yourself. Skate cannot use his vaulting throw as a co-op move, as jumping triggers the launch attack. A workaround is to use his rear grab escape throw instead, giving Skate a chance to kick enemies in front of him.

Three mini-bosses are unlockable as playable characters during the course of the game. Roo the kangaroo can be optionally rescued from his cruel handler Bruce the clown. If successful, the player can select Roo for the rest of the game when using a continue. Alternatively, the player can unlock Roo from the start of the game by using a cheat code at the main menu. Shiva and Ash are unlocked by using a cheat code upon their defeat. Shiva is a martial artist (and Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat lookalike) who is first fought before the final boss in the second game. Ash is an overt homosexual character, who was unfortunately censored from the non-Japanese releases of the game, to avoid causing offence (he was replaced with Shiva). LGBT representation in video games is more in-demand and progressive these days.

Despite being officially unlockable, Roo, Shiva and Ash feel somewhat broken due to incomplete movesets. For example, Ash has no jump kick. Annoyingly, Shiva cannot perform the same punching attack from a grab that the computer-controlled mini-boss version can. Shiva disappointingly has no front throw, and his rear throw is just the same as Axel's. Roo has no front or rear throw and can only kick the opponent (granted, he is a kangaroo). Ash is the first character in the series to have a taunt as one of his grab moves- He can laugh whilst holding the opponent from the front. His powerbomb is an excellent throw, and his release German suplex is also impressive due to the opponent flying high in the air.

Shiva and Ash have no co-op moves. In fact, they risk taking a hit should their partner vault over them. When they throw their partner (or vice versa), it is treated like an attack on the other player rather than a co-op launch. Neither character can escape rear grabs either. Roo has full functionality when it comes to the co-op techniques and rear grab defence. All three unlockable characters were drastically improved in the fan game Streets Of Rage Remake, by being given complete movesets.
