Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) carnivorous plant interacting with a beetle larva, filmed in detailed 4K macro. This feeding sequence follows how sticky trigger hairs respond from first contact through partial and full trap closure, revealing the mechanics of a real capture attempt inside a fly trap.
Unlike typical flying insect prey, this encounter shows how carnivorous plants respond when a slow-moving, ground-dwelling larva moves across the trap surface. The footage highlights texture, movement, mandibles, and fine structural detail, offering a close look at how the Venus flytrap reacts to unusual prey types.
This is not the first predatory larva to appear in my Venus Flytrap Den. A couple of months ago, I filmed a similar cardinal beetle larva (Pyrochroidae) on my carnivorous plants. That video remains live and provides a useful comparison between two closely related larvae interacting with Dionaea muscipula.
Shot in detailed 4K close-up, the video focuses on the mechanics of the trap itself. Macro footage reveals the fine structure of the trap lobes and cilia, along with the insect’s body structure and movement, offering a clear observation of how carnivorous plants respond to different prey behaviours.
This narrated Venus flytrap documentary explores how Dionaea muscipula copes with larval prey, revealing where the limits of this carnivorous plant become visible during real insect encounters.

This video explores Venus flytrap feeding behaviour in Dionaea muscipula, showing how a beetle larva (Cantharidae) moves inside a fly trap and how carnivorous plants respond to slow-moving insects. It captures detailed 4K macro footage of trigger hair activation, trap closure mechanics, and unusual prey interaction, offering close observation of a VFT reacting to a ground-dwelling larval insect in real time.
