In the summer of 2022 we visited Transylvania, Romania. We rented a car a couple of times to drive along the iconc Transfagarsan and Transalpina highways. In addition to those epic drives, we visited nearby villages and towns.
One such town we visited was the Phantom Village of Gherdeal. It is believed that the town was abandoned because of the Romanian Rural Systematization Program implemented during the Presidency of Nicolae Ceaușescu.
While not completely abandoned, the town was very empty and quiet. We spent some time exploring the abandoned buildings and walking around the eerily silent town. We were careful not to disturb any of the infrastructure.
