The Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership and The Forum on Integrated Naval History and Seapower Studies (FINHSS) present the First Bell Lecture: "A Secret Expedition: The Burning of USS Philadelphia and the First Barbary War".
Dr. Abby Mullen is a History Professor at USNA. This lecture is based on her new book, To Fix a National Character: The United States in the First Barbary War, 1800–1805. Dr. Mullen tells the story of the burning of the USS Philadelphia in 1804, with an emphasis on the decisions the American naval leaders had to make in order to pull off this "most bold and daring act of the age."
The First Bell Lectures in Naval Leadership and History are a joint initiative of the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership and the Forum on Integrated Naval History and Seapower Studies (FINHSS), supported by the generous donation of William C. Stutt, USNA Class of 1949.
