A resounding win for the Green Party’s Hannah Spencer in the Gorton and Denton by-election looks set to cause seismic consequences, with Labour MPs once again looking at their leader and thinking there must be a better alternative.
As the dust settles, Sir Keir Starmer will begin yet another fight for his future after being beaten into third place. Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley question whether the Prime Minister should have allowed Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, to stand and if this disastrous result will speed up an Angela Rayner coronation.
Camilla and Tim also look at the allegations of electoral fraud in the constituency, with reports of “family voting”, and ask whether a win for progressives can truly have happened if men were coercing women at the polling booth.
They also assess Reform’s performance and believe that, with Matt Goodwin finishing second with a near 30 per cent vote share, there are reasons to be very optimistic for Nigel Farage.
