Excerpt: t was midnight in May of 1991 when I arrived on the dirt road that led in to Jeffrey’s Bay. The sign that identified the legendary spot had been peppered with bullet holes which seemed odd to me. And the entire little town was completely asleep, hatches battened down; not a creature was stirring and not a light was left on. The bitter cold offshores forced me to layer up with every piece of clothing I had brought. The first glimpse of Supertubes was seen under moonlight. I was 19 years old, from California, and had decided to make South Africa my new home. I sat on the dunes and watched mesmerized by the shimmering swell lines that steamrolled across the point. The beach had an aroma of sage and salt mist. And the scale of the bay was overwhelming; the prehistoric vastness made me feel small, humbled by the sacredness of that moment.
