After waffling between both camps, I tried AWS (ran out of disk space overnight), almost went with DigitalOcean, but ultimately grabbed a $500 Mac Mini.

The killer features: native Mac app access (Music, Reminders, Sonos), running local LLMs without per-call fees, and having a real machine on my network that scales as these AI agents get more capable.

That said, if you just want to experiment without spending much, a VPS works fine.
