Battle of El Alamein 1942: How 19 British 6-pounder anti-tank guns and 300 Desert Rats soldiers destroyed 52 German tanks at Outpost Snipe — the forgotten WWII stand that broke Rommel's Afrika Korps and changed World War 2 forever. This military history documentary reveals the untold story of the 7th Armoured Division's suicidal defense against the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions in the North African Campaign.
October 1942. The British 8th Army was pinned at El Alamein. Rommel's Panzers had better guns, better armor, and a commander who seemed unbeatable. The 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade was ordered to establish a firebase behind enemy lines — and hold until relieved.
They were surrounded by dawn.
What followed was one of the most intense anti-tank engagements in military history. Lieutenant Colonel Vic Turner's men fought with 6-pounder guns until the barrels warped from heat. They fired down the bore when the sights were useless. They held with 10 rounds left against 50 advancing tanks.
By sunset, 52 Axis tanks lay burning around their position.
Rommel signaled Berlin the next day: "The battle is lost."
This is the real story — not the Hollywood version — of how the Desert Rats earned their name.

If the sun had set ten minutes later — or if one more Panzer had pressed the attack — history might have been different.
But the sun went down. And the line held.
