On January 25, 2026, American rock climber Alex Honnold successfully completed a free solo climb of Taipei 101 — the 508-meter (1,667 ft) skyscraper in Taiwan’s capital — without ropes, harnesses, or safety gear. He reached the top in roughly 90 minutes, drawing cheers from spectators on the ground and fans watching worldwide.

He was the first person to scale Taipei 101 solo without protective equipment. A French climber, Alain Robert, had climbed the building before but with safety ropes.

The climb was streamed globally live on Netflix as part of a special event called Skyscraper Live, with a short delay for safety. Viewers around the world tuned in to watch every moment unfold in real time.

The ascent was originally planned for January 24 but was delayed a day due to rain, as wet conditions would have made the glass and metal surfaces too dangerous to climb.

Honnold climbed up one corner of the skyscraper, putting his bare hands and feet on small architectural features and metal outcroppings.

The middle portion of Taipei 101 — known as the “bamboo boxes” — was especially challenging because of its steep, overhanging sections.

Hundreds of spectators gathered at ground level to watch and cheer.

Honnold’s climb drew huge attention worldwide, both for the technical skill involved and the sheer danger of the stunt.

It sparked ethical debates about broadcasting such a high-risk live event and how it influences extreme sports.

Netflix’s event drew millions of views, making it one of the most talked-about live sports/achievement broadcasts of early 2026.

After the climb, Honnold shared that the view from the top was “incredible” and spoke about the thrill of achieving something he’d long dreamed about.

He also later described his compensation for the event as modest compared to major sports contracts, noting he would have been happy to do it even without pay — emphasising the personal challenge over the spectacle.

This was one of the largest urban free solo climbs in history and a symbolic moment showing how far extreme climbing has entered mainstream media.

It combined athletic achievement with live entertainment, attracting both admiration and criticism.
