In July 1941, a Panzer 38(t) rolled into a Soviet field kitchen expecting an easy victory, but instead found Ivan Sereda, a 22-year-old cook armed with nothing but a woodcutting axe. While the rest of his unit was fighting on the front lines, Sereda was peeling potatoes when the German tank appeared, forcing him to make a split-second decision: run and survive, or attack nine tons of steel with a kitchen tool.
What followed was one of the most audacious acts of the Eastern Front, as Sereda leaped onto the hull, bent the tank’s machine gun barrel with his axe, and blinded the crew with a canvas tarp. Using pure psychological warfare, he screamed orders to an imaginary squad, convincing the terrified German crew they were surrounded by an elite force, leading to a humiliation that would earn him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
