Ynys Enlli is a beautiful island about two miles off the coast of the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales. It has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and has provided generations with a good living. In more modern times the population has dropped. It is a hard place to live in the Winter when heavy seas can make is inaccessible for weeks. The necessities of modern life have to be brought in by sea (half and hour)
Thanks to a very exciting project to create power from turbines placed beneath the Bardsey Sound it has a chance to be liked to mains electricity for the first time in its very long history-an island potentially powered by 'Blue Energy"
Nothing has been decided. The company behind the project Nova Innovation are moving very carefully as the area is ecologically very sensitive.
There is still a lot of talking to do. And it is clear that everyone involved in this puts what is right for the island's future at the top of the agenda.
But this is a question for all of us. How do we power our lifestyle?
My thanks to Dr Kate Smith of Nova Innovation, tenant farmer, Gareth Roberts and the island's boatman, Colin Evans.
