Jaisalmer literally means ‘the Hill Fort of Jaisal’. The desert city is also called the Golden city thanks to the color it gets from the yellow sandstone used for construction of the buildings. Jaisalmar is one the last big towns in Rajasthan closest to the India-Pakistan border and stands in the heart of the Thar Desert.
A man-made water reservoir, the Gadisar Lake was once the only source of water in Jaisalmer. Constructed by the first ruler of Jaisalmer, Raja Rawal Jaisal, it is surrounded by temples and ghats. One can spend some peaceful time in the serene surroundings of the lake or choose to go boating as well.
One of the most popular tourist attractions of Jaisalmer, Sam Sand Dunes is a must- visit in the Rajasthan state. If you visit the 'Golden City', then it is a must that enjoy a Desert Safari because if you do not explore the vast Thar on a camel's back, you really miss all the fun.
