L&N R.R. Lantern Restoration via Electrolysis

Описание: In this video, we fully restore an original L&N (Louisville & Nashville) Railroad lantern—a piece of American railroad history—using the electrolysis method. These lanterns were essential tools used by railroad workers for communication and safety during night operations and in low-visibility conditions. Long before the days of walkie-talkies and LED signals, these lanterns helped conductors, brakemen, and engineers relay crucial messages through a coded system of colors and lantern movements.

The L&N Railroad, founded in 1850, played a significant role in the growth of the southeastern United States. It connected cities like Louisville, Nashville, Birmingham, and New Orleans, transporting both freight and passengers. By restoring this lantern, we’re preserving a tangible piece of that legacy.

The restoration process started with electrolysis—a fascinating technique that uses electrical current to remove rust from metal without damaging the original material. We initially attempted electrolysis using super washing soda (sodium carbonate), but results were subpar. So, we adapted and switched to a 100% lye (sodium hydroxide) soak for 24 hours, which proved far more effective in breaking down decades of corrosion. Afterward, the lantern was thoroughly rinsed, dried, and sealed with oil to prevent future rusting.

This isn’t just a restoration—it’s a revival of a historical artifact that tells the story of America’s industrial past.
