Union Home Minister Amit Shah has tested positive for coronavirus, which has infected more than 17 lakh people in the country. Sources said he has been admitted to Medanta hospital, located in Haryana's Gurugram near Delhi. In a tweet, the minister said his health was "fine" but he was being hospitalised "on the advice of doctors". He also requested that all those "who have come in contact with me in the last few days, please isolate yourself and get your inquiry done".
Sources said extensive contact tracing will be carried out and anyone who came in contact with the minister will have to self-isolate.

Mr Shah, 55, had taken part in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, which was attended by all top ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, defence minister Rajnath Singh, and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. All safety norms, including social distancing, were followed at the crucial meet, where the National Education Policy was approved.

Uttar Pradesh minister Kamal Rani Varun, who had earlier tested positive for the novel coronavirus, died due to the infection in Lucknow this morning. She was 62.
The minister died at 9:30 AM at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, the government said in a statement. Kamal Rani Varun, who served as Minister of Technical Education, is the first minister in Uttar Pradesh to die after contracting coronavirus.

The 62-year-old politician was admitted to hospital on July 18 after she tested positive.

"She had comorbidities in the form of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypothyroidism. She had bilateral pneumonia at admission and was shifted to ICU on the day of admission itself because of high oxygen requirement.," Dr RK Dhiman, Director SGPGI, Lucknow, said.

President Ram Nath Kovind, in his condolence message, said that Kamal Rani Varun was well respected for serving people at the grassroots.

hours after Uttar Pradesh minister Kamal Rani Varun's death due to coronavirus on Sunday, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Swatantra Dev Singh and Jal Shakti minister Mahendra Singh tested positive for the infection.

Uttar Pradesh Jal Shakti minister Mahendra Singh, who has contracted the virus, has been admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science (SGPGI) in Lucknow.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh took to Twitter to inform that he has tested coronavirus positive. The senior BJP leader has quarantined himself at his residence. He has urged people who came in contact with him to get themselves tested.

Swatantra Dev Singh also appealed to the people to take all the necessary precautions and follow the Covid-19 guidelines.



UP Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh, who tested coronavirus positive last month, is also under home isolation.

Chetan Chauhan, Rajendra Pratap Singh and Ayush minister Dharam Singh Saini are among other ministers in the Uttar Pradesh government who had contracted the infection earlier.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Minister for Technical Education Kamal Rani Varun Kamal Rani Varun lost the battle against Covid-19 on Sunday morning after getting admitted to SGPGI in Lucknow on July 18.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, state cabinet ministers and top bureaucrats paid condolences to her at the CM's residence in Lucknow.

Sixty two-year-old Kamal Rani was the BJP MLA from Ghatampur constituency.

Yogi Adityanath has also cancelled his visit to Barabanki and Ayodhya on Sunday due to the cabinet minister's death.
