An early portrait of Mona Hatoum, a Palestian in a framework analysis, filmed by Simon Underwood in 1989 as part of Vistamundi. Shot on Hi-8 video and broadcast on Channel Four and MTV. The video was exhibited alongside Mona Hatoum's film 'Roadworks' at Usurp Art Gallery's launch exhibition 'Naissance' in 2010, curated by Poulomi Desai. http://www.usurp.org.uk/exhibition/na...
Vista Mundi (1989-92) formed by Simon Underwood and Clémentine Deliss to investigate the possibilities of using early portable video technologies to mediate between marginalised communities and documentary film-makers.
Using a notion of 'Video-graphic Dialogues' as a representational model local to the situation and community, and by reflecting both the compromises and limits of the media, the idea was to challenge and unfold the nebulous, political and psychological fears of the effects of dialogue.
The aim was both to integrate this into a new methodology of reflexive anthropology and to displace the established and dominant 'Disappearing World' format in mainstream television of the day.
Their work has been exhibited at the Styrian Autumn, Graz 1990, Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, 1991, and in the groundbreaking documentary series 'BUZZ', Channel 4 and MTV (1990).
