What's up everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out the Yakima off-grid on our 2022 Subaru outback wagon. So this is gonna be a good option for your roof, that way you can carry more stuff, either you can get stuff out of your vehicle, making more leg room for everybody, or if you already have your car loaded up, your Subaru's loaded, you wanna get even more stuff up on the roof, you can do that. It's a good option, just because if you have the open design here on the outside, plenty of room to run those straps and tie down your cargo. It's open up on the back side too. It's got the wind visor, wind deflector on the front that you can't remove.
It's gonna cut down on that noise, but if you we're to get some 2x4s or something from the hardware store, you could put those in there, remove this, and then kind of have that elongated load that actually comes out to here and back here without having the railings in the way. Just plenty of options to help you out with that or whatever you need to take with ya. So let's hop up there and talk about it a little bit more. Once you're up here, you can see the bar design here on the base. Then you have bars on the top side you can kind of use as dividers, or extra tie-down points as well if you load your stuff up here, and then different sections.
There's a middle section you can get. If you want the longer version, you can add that in here. That's gonna make that a little bit longer, if you need more room up here on your roof. Same with the bars. You can get more bars and add those too, only really if you extend it.
Now, it's gonna have a weight capacity of 165lb, so just keep that in mind with whatever you want to load it with, and make sure you check your roof rack, whether it's factory or aftermarket, see what its weight rating is and go by that too, so if it's lower, if your roof rack's lower, go by that, you don't wanna overload this and damage your vehicle at all. Now, since we're talking about loading it up with gear, let's figure out some measurements on how much it can actually hold. So we're gonna go side-to-side first. And it's gonna be the inside usable space. That's kind of rounded, but from inside-to-inside is gonna be 38".
And then let me go underneath these bars here to get the next measurement: looks to be about 39" that way, so just keep that in mind when you're loading it up, that's how much space you have to work with and that weight capacity of 165lb is another thing to keep in mind when you're loading up all that gear. Another measurement probably to look at would be how much it adds to the top of your roof bars. So we'll go to the top of your roof bar, the top of the basket, which seems to be the top of this rail. Let me adjust the tape measure, so we'll come to about here. It's gonna be 6.5", so it's gonna add 6.5" to the top, not to mention whatever gear you put in here, it might be a little bit taller, so just keep that in mind when you're in those low clearance areas, prove your Subaru's not too tall, it shouldn't have any issues, but remember that when you're pulling your garage or anything like that, you don't wanna have any accidents that way. Now another one to think about is the space in between. It doesn't add a whole lot, 'cause you know, sometimes, whether you have the factory bars like this, or if you have the aftermarket bars, those might be a little bit thicker, so you're gonna have less room. The strap that goes around here, it's rubber coated. It's pretty thin. It's not adding a whole bunch. It should not really cause you any issues, because you really only have 2" of space from the roof to the bottom of that bar, but that's so thin that it's not really adding to it. It's not gonna make contact. Now while we're up here, let's look at how it installs on there. It's really easy. There's no tools involved. You kind of slide this part back, which releases this mechanism and I'll try and keep my hands outta the way, so you can see it a little bit better. You push that back, and this comes out, and the strap is released. Just like that. Now to re-install it, you take the strap, and you pull it with the tabs angled up, 'cause they're gonna peel you right in there. It's gonna have tension on that. It's gonna pull that tight underneath and slide that back into place. Now there is parts for lock cores that you can add on later on. That w
