This clip begins with a bizarre looking machine that is an East German built cane harvester. Cutting cane by hand is an arduous, back-breaking activity especially in tropical temperatures. This monster makes short work of cutting large cane fields. Manual cutting is still required in confined areas.
Standard gauge Baldwin 2-8-0 built 1919 hauls a special train from Cero Redondo mill.
Rafael Freyre mill had an extensive thirty inch gauge system operated by steam locos many of which were built for the line up to one hundred years previously. Rafael Freyre is located near the eastern end of the island and was the most scenic system in Cuba. Despite its relatively remote location, it was a must for most enthusiasts visiting the island.
The Baldwin 2-8-0 in this video celebrated its hundredth birthday in 2005, the year of my visit.
