When it comes to allowing things outside of God to resolve our stresses, anxieties, sadness, shame, trauma, we usually turn to things that pull us further away from Him and treat those things as solutions. We develop a dependency on things that ultimately effect our physical and spiritual wellbeing. God doesn't desire that outcome for us. And sometimes that thing we turn to (temporarily) makes us feel so good, so much better, forget the hard things, that we cope in such a way that it replaces where God would sit in our priorities. It may get so deep that we feel we can't function normally without a thing... that's the enemy's territory. If that thing can cause you to compromise how you allow God to be present in your life, it can cause you to compromise A LOT of things. God never wants us in that space of bondage and at the mercy of a thing (person or place). This is why He commands us to put nothing before Him or even on His level at all (before also meaning in His presence, facing Him).
Exodus 20:3
"You shall have no other gods before Me."
