Two brilliant poets, two friends, and two women locked in a dance with death. Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath met in 1959 at Boston University, at a class for young poets. They were captivated by each others' works but also shared that bond that ultimately would rob them both of their lives and us of their talents.
Sylvia and Anne were deeply inspired by the work each was doing, and we know of poems that were inspired (or in envy) of each other. Sexton's "Her Kind" inspired Plath's "Lady Lazarus" and Plath's "Daddy" inspired Sexton's "My Friend, My Friend."
In this recitation of those four works, listeners will hear the borrowed phrasing and cadence, shared themes and even words.
Friendship can inspire the MUSE. Common creativity can light the MUSE on fire. But was Death the ultimate MUSE for Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath?
