From the road, the Fairchild plantation looks solid. Inside, it’s rotting under the weight of cards, whiskey and unpaid notes.
Tonight’s story follows Eleanor Fairchild, a childless mistress trapped with a drunken, gambling husband and a bank that is about to call in every debt he ever signed. When she learns the man from the bank will be staying under her roof, she makes a quiet, dangerous decision: she thinks she can turn her husband’s strongest slave, Josiah, into her secret weapon.
She doesn’t ask Josiah to touch her. She asks him to do something worse: stop saving her husband. Stop catching him when he falls. Stop hiding the violence that keeps this house standing, so the banker can finally see the monster behind the polite letters.
The plan works… at first. The ledger turns against her husband. But then the ink slides in a new direction: Josiah’s name goes straight onto the list of slaves the bank plans to sell to patch the debt, and Eleanor’s name appears in the banker’s notes as someone to “watch closely.”
This is a slow, heavy slavery story about a mistress, a slave, and a ledger that doesn’t care who thought they were in control. The characters are fictional, but the banks, ledgers and logic come from the real history of slavery and debt in the American South.
